darkbooks.org began in early 2008 I am happy to donate my time to providing you this resource, I would also like to note, that, although I try, I do not always have enough time to deal with the site, including, unfortunately, I do not always have time to answer all letters, because I have to earn money for a living. If you can financially help me, it would free me from the worries of earning money for living, perhaps partially, but ideally completely, then all 100% of my time could be devoted to the site. Also I do pay monthly web server/files storage and hosting costs to keep this site on the air. Please consider making a donation to help me continue this activity and devote more time to it or at least offset the cost of paying for storage/hosting. Even a small contribution helps!

Ye lyttle Salem maide, a story of witchcraft (1898), a novel by Pauline Bradford Mackie (1873-?), Lamson, Wolffe and Co., Boston, 1898.

PAULINE BRADFORD MACKIE has distinguished herself as a writer of historical fiction, and for this her work is worthy of close consideration. The work of Pauline Bradfo d Mackie does not exhibit the early influences of her literary career as do the creations of some other authors who have passed through a similar period of apprenticeship. For two years after graduation from the Toledo High School, she was engaged in writing for the Toledo Blade, but perhaps with not sufficient seriousness, for, at the time, she was anxious to become an artist, and was almost as busy with the brush and pencil as with the pen.

Perhaps no embryo writer of romance, who eventually has made a rep t tation of worth, had more trying experie ces than fell to her when first she essaye the task of authorship. The old Peterson Magazine published two of her early ven ures, but never paid for them, and the firs story for which she was ever paid appeared. in Worthington's Magazine, which issued only one number subsequent to that in, which her article was published. Her first ong story, " Mademoiselle de Berny," had a conflicting career with the second, " Ye Lyttle Salem Maide," which possesses distinctly humorous side. The first had been refused by a Philadelphia house, but, as they wished a girl's story of considerable length, " Ye Lyttle Salem Maide " was written and sent to them. Again they were dissatisfied, and sent it back with the statement that it was of but forty thousand words in length, and they wished it to be extended to sixty.
